Shining Cliff Woods
Discovery and Inspiration
This beautiful unspoilt mature woodland was designated as a SSSI in the 1980’s. The diversity of its flora and fauna make this an ideal setting for groups to take part in activities such as bushcraft, ecology and environmental art. A walk in the woods is a journey of discovery. Trees include Sessile and Pendunculate Oak, Birch, Hazel, Sweet Chestnut, Broad Leaved Lime, Yew, Rowan, Ash, Holly and Alder. There are also Bilberry, Wild Honeysuckle, Woodruff, Bluebells and many uncommon ferns, sedges mosses and liverworts. Animal species living in the woods include hairy wood ants, foxes, badgers, rabbits, bats and many birds and insects.
The woods have been the inspiration of artists and writers for many years. Why not walk to the Betty Kenny tree said to be the inspiration for the nursery rhyme “Rock A Bye Baby”.
