Shining Cliff

A small outdoor centre, providing something special.

The Shining Cliff experience is certainly unique. Starting with a 10-minute walk into the heart of the ancient woodland, you get a real feeling of tranquility and excitement. We believe that the location and standard of facilities play an important role in helping young people feel comfortable and relaxed and in a state of mind to reflect and develop.

With its own crags, streams, lakes and over 100-acres of mature woodland, Shining Cliff has everything on its doorstep. We take advantage of this special environment with many of our programs based in the woodland itself.

This outdoor activity centre sleeps up to 20 people in 5 comfortable rooms; there is a fully equipped self-catering kitchen, dining area, lounge and three composting toilets and solar powered showers. A great alternative to bunkhouse or bunkbarn for your family gathering, walking group, educational or environmental activities.

Shining Cliff Woods

Discovery and Inspiration

This beautiful unspoilt mature woodland was designated as a SSSI in the 1980’s. The diversity of its flora and fauna make this an ideal setting for groups to take part in activities such as bushcraft, ecology and environmental art. A walk in the woods is a journey of discovery. Trees include Sessile and Pendunculate Oak, Birch, Hazel, Sweet Chestnut, Broad Leaved Lime, Yew, Rowan, Ash, Holly and Alder. There are also Bilberry, Wild Honeysuckle, Woodruff, Bluebells and many uncommon ferns, sedges mosses and liverworts. Animal species living in the woods include hairy wood ants, foxes, badgers, rabbits, bats and many birds and insects.

The woods have been the inspiration of artists and writers for many years. Why not walk to the Betty Kenny tree said to be the inspiration for the nursery rhyme “Rock A Bye Baby”.

The Centre

The centre accommodates up to 20 people and assuming you require 1 bedroom each for male and female staff, this leaves 16 beds for students (2 rooms of 6 and 1 room for 4).

Visiting groups can either develop their own programme of activity and / or sample our range of adventurous and educational activities. Just being in the wonderful woodland, having a chance to enjoy the rich environment, sets the scene for learning and development. Residential experiences have long been recognised as highly valuable.

Sharing food preparation and domestic tasks in the well-equipped modern kitchen provides an excellent learning opportunity for young people. Not only does this help students to develop life skills but can also be used as a valuable opportunity to learn about and reinforce healthy eating.

The communal space is light, comfortable and adaptable. The dining area can easily be used as a classroom and the lounge provides a place to relax.

Woodland Classroom

Our Woodland Classroom lies within 100 acres of ancient broadleaf woodland at Shining Cliff, near Ambergate, just north of Derby. Designed to give a comfortable indoor work space the classroom provides a perfect location for a day of discovery in the great outdoors at any time of year.

Whether groups are learning bushcraft skills, studying the woodland, ponds and streams or enjoying activities such as environmental art and creative writing, the location allows environmental education to be fully interactive.

With funding support from the John Weston Fund the building has been recently developed to provide a light, practical indoor space in which to work. Making use of an existing building and adding solar powered lighting means we have kept the environmental impact to a minimum.
